Henry Adams may well have been speaking about our beloved Mrs. Clarice Howarth (nee’ Garnet, affectionately called‘Garnie’) who was called back to her maker on January 29th 2013 in the UK. These words precisely echo the thoughts of her former students of Wesley Girls High School!
For 31 years, she sacrificed and dedicated her life to raising and educating young girls who would grow up to be leaders in their local communities, their country Ghana and around the world. Her ‘girls’ as she fondly called them acknowledge her and give her all the credit for their achievements and who they are today.
On August 24th 2013, all roads lead to the Ghana Embassy in Washington DC, as WGHS old girls, resplendent in different colors and designs of their school cloth, will gather for a grand remembrance ceremony, the last of many events held in memory of this well-beloved and respected human being. Her exemplary life has been celebrated in Ghana, the United Kingdom and now in the United States.
Organizers of this special event are leaving no stone unturned in making this particular celebration a once in a lifetime event. Intense preparations are underway, with special guests of honor invited from around the world. Though the organizers are mumabout whom these special guests are, it is rumored that there will be many notable alumnae present. They have contacted many old girls from far and near, who plan to descend on Washington DC, the nation’s capital, for this much awaited event. So far, RSVPs have been received from as far away as Australia and as near as Canada. Old girls will be arriving from the UK, Ghana, and Latin American countries, to name a few.
The occasion will also be a time to remember some of our dear teachers who have left us, alas, too soon. It is said that:
Teachers who inspire know that teaching is like cultivating aflower and those who would have nothing to do with thorns must never attempt to gather flowers.
‘Old Girls’, as they call themselves, are looking forward to an exciting evening of reunion and remembrance as we payrespect and homage to the wonderful and dedicated educators who instilled discipline and character in them. Organizers are urging all old girls from far and near to meet in Washington DC for a night of celebration and appreciation!
Let’s get ready for a Night to Remember! Saturday August 24th.
