Former Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party Nana Akomea says the contributions of Winnie Mandela, former wife of Patriot and president of South Africa Nelson Mandela should not be drowned into oblivion.

Akomea is concerned about the seeming obliteration of the role Winnie played in the Apartheid struggle in South Africa.

His comments come in the wake of the overwhelming tributes from world leaders celebrating Nelson Mandela who died last Thursday after a protracted lung infection.

Mandela, a Nobel Prize winner is described in glowing terms as a global icon, a man with a "stately grace" a liberator, a unifier, a born leader and a president.

He was acclaimed while he was alive and hailed even in death.

Discussing the death of Nelson Mandela and the chorus of praises that greeted it, Nana Akomea said on Asempa FM's Ekosii-Sen programme that Winnie Mandela should not be forgotten in the entire story of Mandela's Legacy.

He said Winnie held the fort during the 27 years when Mandela was serving a prison sentence at the Robben Island and she did it so well.

She organised many protest matches across the country, mounted pressure on the government at the time which eventually led to the release of Mandela from Prison.

While the world may be justified in showering praises on Mandela, Nana Akomea said world leaders should not forget the towering role played by his former wife Winnie Mandela.
