The writ filed by a Liberian refugee at an Accra Fast-Track High Court compelling the government to produce his wife has been struck out by the court.Chausinda Lawrences filed the writ about two weeks ago with the support of the Legal Resources Center (LRC) and the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI).The plaintiff was praying the court to compel the government to produce his wife who was being held at Kordeabe. He also wanted the government to justify why she was being held at the centre which the government designated a refugee centre.About 600 protesting refugees had been taken to the centre by the police after they defied calls to call off a strike the government said was illegal. After a series of interventions by the Liberian government, the mainly women refugees were taken back to the Buduburam camp.Following the release of the refugees including the plaintiff’s wife Counsel for the plaintiff Nana Oye Lithur asked the court presided over by Justice Ofori Atta to suspend the case. She however told Joy News that she was going to file another writ asking for a judicial review of the administrative actions of the Interior Minister and the Inspector General of Police.“We are also coming back to court on Tuesday, April 8, [2008]. We have filed for a habeas corpus for 23 women and children” being held by the Ghana Immigration Service she noted.According to her the 23 women and children had been detained in the cells of the Immigration Service, adding her organization had been denied access to them.
