Regional Coordinators of the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) formerly National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) have condemned Zoomlion’s attempt to justify the service management fees they charge beneficiaries of the Youth in Sanitation Module. Joy News’ investigations have revealed government pays Zoomlion GHS 500 for each beneficiary. But the government has signed a contract with Zoomlion, which allows the company to keep GHS 400 of that money as management fees. This revelation was part of Manasseh Azure Awuni’s investigative report into how questionable contracts government has signed with some service providers are robbing the nation of millions of cedis while beneficiaries’ service conditions worsen. But Zoomlion’s Director of Communications, Robert Coleman, who spoke on the issue on the Super Morning Show, explained that the GHS 400 supports “empirical evidence” of expenses the company incurs, which was submitted to the Ministry of Local Government. He said there were clear evidence of logistics that are sent to workers on the field for anyone to see for themselves. But his explanation has angered some Regional Coordinators of GYEEDA. Also speaking on the Super Morning Show on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the Coalition of GYEEDA Regional Coordinators, Samuel Atta Mensah, challenged the company to provide a better explanation. He said Zoomlion’s expenses under the arrangement it has with the district assemblies, Local Government Ministry, and Ministry of Health leaves the company with only petty expenses to care of. “The district assemblies are paying for final disposal sites, and when you come to the bola containers, the district assemblies are paying for [them too], so virtually government is paying for everything”, he indicated. The Upper East Regional Coordinator of GYEEDA, Kopanamo James Kojo, also told Joy News apart from the Bolga Municipality, shortage of equipment is so widespread some beneficiaries work with their bare hands. Meanwhile, government has given the strongest indication that persons who will be found culpable in the ongoing GYEEDA investigations will not be spared. Briefing the media at the Presidency Wednesday morning, Deputy Information Minister Murtala Mohammmed said government will make public, the findings of a committee investigating the matter. Murtala Mohammed is however asking the general public and the media having relevant information to make them available to the committee to enable them do their work well.
