A total of 109 people have died in road accidents in the Brong Ahafo Region in the first quarter of 2016, the Regional DVLA Director has said.

Antwi Bosompem described the situation as a "very alarming one" during a pedestrian safety campaign in Sunyani on Wednesday, May 18.

The campaign was organized by the Road Safety Commission to create awareness and reduce the number of road accidents.

Out of the 109 deaths, 28 pedestrian deaths were recorded, according to the DVLA Director.

Antwi Bosompem advised pedestrians to wear bright-coloured outfits so drivers can easily notice them when they use the road at night.

The Regional Planning Officer of the Road Safety Commission, Yaw Asante entreated pedestrians to cross roads at safe points.

"Make sure the driver makes provision for you before you cross the road," Yaw Asante cautioned.

Over 60 people perished in a fatal car crash which occurred on the Tamale-Kintampo road in February this year. This is believed to have caused the number of deaths to shoot up to 109.

However, the 109 deaths recorded in the first quarter this year can be considered an improvement as out of 390 accidents recorded between January and June in 2015, there were 135 deaths.
