The Christian Council of Ghana will embark on a voter education campaign in 15 districts from the Greater Accra, Eastern and Northern Regions of Ghana. The campaign which will be launched in Accra on Monday is aimed at educating electorates on rules governing electionsSpeaking to Joy News the General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Dr. Fred Deegbe, said the campaign would contribute to minimizing some of the challenges associated with organizing electionsHe said, as election observers it was always difficult correcting some election anomalies during the elections and that it was necessary to educate the electorates before the actual election takes place. He added that the campaign is opened to all religious groups and would be organized in collaboration with the Ghana Conference on Religion for peace. The campaign is being funded by a German Christian NGO, Church Developers Services.Meanwhile, the Ghana Bar Association has expressed confidence in the Electoral Commission to organize a free and fair election in December and has called on all Political Parties to give the EC the needed support. The President of the Association Nii Osa Mills said the basis of any election is a clean voters register and was happy that the EC immediately set up a committee to investigate allegations of the ‘bloated’ register. He said the commission has so far endeared itself and called on all stake holders to trust and confide in the institution. He added, the Bar is preparing to make an input into the upcoming election as part of their constitutional mandate to promote the rule of law. “Having done elections, there may be petitions, so we will take steps to ensure that our members get to know their duties very well in terms of handling election petitions and would liaise with the Judiciary for these petitions to be handled effectively ”This he noted will help maintain the confidence in the system.Author: Nathan Gadugah
