Seven members of a Catholic church at Akosombo in the Eastern Region have been confirmed dead in an accident at Asitey, a suburb of Odumase Krobo.
Several others also sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The victims, three males and four females, were part of a group of over 50 that were returning to Akosombo from a funeral at Akim Oda.
They died on the spot after the bus they were travelling on plunged into a valley on the Asitey Mountain.
The injured, numbering about 40, were admitted at the St. Martin's De Pores hospital at Odumase and the Atua Government Hospital where they are receiving medical attention.valle
An eyewitness told Joy News it was a struggle to rescue the victims.
“We were told that the brake failed and the car plunged into the valley. We went down the valley to help them and we realised seven people were dead and other badly injured so we rushed them to the hospital,” he said.
Meanwhile, the MP for the area, Ebenezer Tei Larbi describing the accident as a “very bad one” blamed the accident on reckless driving.
“The problem on that road is that sometimes the drivers are very reckless because I spoke to those who were on the vehicle, some bystanders and drivers who met the vehicle on the way who said the driver was overspeeding.
“A Hyundai driver told me that he even cautioned the driver who ignored his advice. I don’t think that is the first time the driver involved in the accident is using that road,” he stated.
