Kwaku Ababio, the truck driver who crushed two students of the University of Ghana to death last Friday, was hauled before the Madina District Magistrate Court yesterday but could not appear before the presiding magistrate. The court noted that it hears only civil cases on Mondays and since the charges proffered against him were criminal, the court asked the prosecution to present him today. Kwaku Ababio, 47, would appear before the court today, Tuesday, January 22, 2013 to answer charges on inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm barring any difficulty. Ababio and Gilbert Darko aged about 25 were in charge of the Mercedes Benz refuse truck registered GE 645 X and Kia Avera taxi with registration no. GE 4707-12 respectively when the two vehicles collided at the Okponglo traffic light off the Madina-Legon road at about 1:30am. Lordina Fobih and her friend Debby Akosu- Denkyira Benaye, who were both first year students of Ghana's premier university, were probably coming from town when the incident happened. Lordina has since been identified as daughter of Prof Dominic Fobih, former Minister of Education and Sports under the Kufuor administration. A school mate of the deceased said both girls were former students of Holy Child School in Cape Coast. The truck, according to police sources, was returning from a dump site at Madina area to Mallam Junction. The taxi driver attempted to cross from the East Legon section of the road to join the T-Junction that leads to the Legon campus of the University of Ghana. At the time, the amber of the traffic light was not operating because it was pass midnight. The truck rammed into the taxi, killing the two teenagers. The driver of the taxi, who is receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital, sustained severe injuries. Even though Gilbert Darko, the cabbie stands accused for the role he might have played in the fatal accident, his fractured leg and other injuries prevented the police for presenting him before the court. The Legon District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kwadwo Anning, told DAILY GUIDE that the truck driver would be arraigned before court today. He declined to give further details, saying the court would determine what the police should do.
