The Credit Union Association (CUA) of Ghana has made available an amount of GH¢15,000 through the Hohoe Community Association of Small Scale Cooperatives Credit Union (HOCCACU) to support 150 women members engaged in petty trading.
The package formed part of the CUA's poverty reduction drive among its women members.
Mr Godfried Adanuti, Volta Regional branch Manager of CUA who disclosed this to the GNA said the scheme was fashioned out to increase the capital base of petty traders towards attaining self-reliance.
He said it is also to inculcate the culture of savings among members and to facilitate lending their own savings in times of need.
Mr Adanuti said a similar support was extended to the Logba Dunenyo, Juapong community and teachers' and the Ho community credit unions.
He said its total asset rose to GH¢120,000 (¢1.2 billion) in the last five years with 450 members.
Mrs Fortune Abusuasem, Board Chairperson of HOCCACU urged the women to form small cooperatives to enable them benefit from the scheme.
She said the group would be held responsible for default as the scheme allows them to decide how much to save on the principal cash.
