Politicians have a reputation for rendering truth as malleable as corn-starch.

They develop over the years, a talent for twisting and bending the truth into whatever shape is required to fill the jagged holes punched in their integrity.

In this regard, Ambrose Dery is no ordinary politician. Ghana’s Interior minister is a straight-talking lawyer with a towering reputation in both the legal and political fraternities - a man who picks his words carefully, and would rather stay silent, than speak only to be called a liar.

As the Minister responsible for the Interior, his own reputation is currently vulnerable to hole-punching, following the revelations in the Joy News Report on Militia in the heart of the Nation.

The revelation of a self-acclaimed vigilante group, De Eye, trained by ex-military officers, illegally taking up residence and running drills within the walls of the Christianbourg Castle in Osu, has sparked nationwide controversy.

Some elements in the Administration have vehemently defended government, seeking to create distance from the group, which is led by the President’s former bodyguard. Other elements have sought to explain away the actions of the De-Eye Group, making strenuous efforts to discredit the media that exposed the group and its activities.

Amidst all the controversy, there remain serious questions to be answered, regarding (among other things) the role of the police in the eviction, and subsequent failure to arrest any leaders, of the De-Eye group, as well as the fact that Mr Dery’s Interior Ministry confirmed they had not licensed the self-confessed vigilante/militia group to operate as a security company – even though they advertised themselves asuch on their website.

With these questions and more bursting out of the quiver of Joy News’ Kojo Yankson, the Honourable Member of Parliament for Nandom, sat down in a comfy leather armchair set against a fiery orange abstract art background in the Presidential Suite of the Tang Palace Hotel, for an exclusive interview.

Would Dery remain his soft-spoken, straight-shooting self? Or would this be the issue that finally sees the Cabinet Minister demonstrate the politician’s skill for kneading the truth into starchy balls of propaganda?

Watch the interview below and find out.
