Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region, Mathew Opoku-Prempeh is demanding officials of the Bank of Ghana be to hauled before the House for not adequately monitoring savings and loans companies in the country.
According to him, the Central Bank’s ineffective monitoring mandate has been responsible for many Ghanaians losing their money to saving and loans companies operating in the country.
Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh was particularly unhappy that despite several reminders to the Central Bank to appear before the House to explain the existence of some saving and loans companies without licenses, it has failed to do so.
"I don't know the sort of law or which part of the Constitution makes the Bank of Ghana so inaccessible to Members of Parliament", he said.
Addressing Parliament on the issue, Dr. Prempeh condemned the level at which some Ghanaians are losing their hard earned money to some micro finance firms.
He therefore charged the House to enforce its Constitutional mandate by playing an oversight role over state institutions and intensifying efforts to bring the leadership of the Bank before them to answer questions on the conduct of savings and loans companies in the country.
