Miss Lydia Lariba Bawa has been appointed as the Commissioner of Insurance effective June 1, 2013 by H.E. President John Dramani Mahama. She Chartered as an Insurer in1992 and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Insurance (UK).
Prior to her appointment, Miss. Bawa was a Chief Manager at SIC Insurance Company Limited as well as the Area Manager in charge of the Northern Sector. She was employed by SIC Insurance Company as a young graduate in September 1982 after completing her National Service and has served the company diligently and loyally in various capacities for over 30 years.
She was once the Head of Motor Claims Department and served twice as the Tema Area Manager supervising the Tema, Ho, Koforidua, Akim Oda and Aflao offices. Miss. Bawa had also headed several Departments such as Customer Service, Sales and Marketing, and Health Insurance.
The new Insurance Commissioner is a product of the University of Ghana, graduating with a BA (Hon) Degree in English and History in 1981. She then proceeded to the West Africa Insurance Institute in Liberia and was awarded a Diploma with distinction in 1984. She entered the Ghana School of Law in 1991 and was called to the Bar in 1995. In 2006, Miss. Bawa obtained an EMBA (Finance) from the University of Ghana Business School.
She has since 2000 been a visiting lecturer at the West Africa Insurance Institute in Banjul, The Gambia; and a part-time lecturer on various subjects at the Ghana Insurance College (GIC) since its establishment in 2006.
Miss Bawa is currently the Legal Adviser to the National Catholic Laity Council and the Organising Secretary of the Catholic Lawyers Guild. She also serves on the Boards of the National Catholic Laity Council, the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), the Metro Mass Transit Company Limited, and the Council for Technical Education and Training (COTVET).
