The Coalition against the new voter's register has publicised an email between them and what they claim the manufacturers of the biometric registration kits contradicting the Electoral Commission’s defense that the current biometric kits are not fit to conduct the upcoming general elections.
At a press conference Tuesday, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, said the manufacturers admitted in the email that, even though current BVRs needed to be upgraded, components like the fingerprint scanners are robust and fit for use.
Reading the manufacturer’s reply, he said: “The enrollment software could easily be upgraded with facial recognition, a feature which has been incorporated in their new software release.
“The cost of upgrading the current BVR equipment with new functionalities will be far cheaper than replacing them with new equipment. HSB Identifications BV is willing to assist the EC to carry out these upgrades upon request.”
He also claimed that an email from the suppliers of the current BVDs, GenKey Africa, also contradicted EC’s claim that 72,000 BVDs they supplied Ghana are obsolete, and not fit to be used for this year’s election.
The Coalition then concluded that this new evidence affirms their stance that the current register is reliable and in good shape to carry out the December 7 polls.
The EC has set a date for the compilation of a new electoral roll, insisting a new voters’ register would enhance the credibility and integrity of the 2020 elections.
However, Mr Asiedu Nketia alleged that EC's quest to create a new register despite the evidence is a clear indication that the Commission wants to rig the election for President Akufo Addo.
“It is to say that the Jean Mensah-led EC has been telling well-packaged lies to Ghanaians; lies deliberately calculated to court public support for the compilation of a new voters register.
“And it clearly shows that something fishy is going on at the EC. It is either Jean Mensah or her sponsors have a financial interest in the procurement of entirely new equipment or that the compilation of a new register is part of a rigging agenda for the benefit of NPP or both,” he was categorical.
He further stressed the Coalition is going to employ every legal means to fight against “the devious machinations and reckless attempt by the EC to waste the public purse” on the compilation of a new register. Below is the full statement from the Coalition:Latest Stories
