Government is looking at the option of reviewing taxes imposed on imported mobile phones or tightening checks at the ports, following reports of some smuggling by importers of mobile handsets.
Joy Business gathers that officials at the revenue authority fear this might affect the projected revenue of almost 50 million Ghana cedis.
Tax consultant, Ali Nakyea tells Joy News the development shows that government should look at levying the duty on consumption rather than the handsets.
“Of course there would be a use of it, so in the use he has to contribute to national development by paying a tax on the use of it, it would not be distortionary as it were, the impact would be lower because it would be on an ability to pay.”
