A Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, Felix Ofosu Kwakye says Government is committed to improving the energy sector, reminding all, that the Mahama administration has a policy to achieve about 5000 megawatts capacity by 2016.
He says the Bui dam project, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year, will generate 400 megawatts of electricity, in addition to theT3 project which will add 132 megawatts and that the current expansion project on the T2 will also add another 110 megawatts, to be completed by 2015.
Speaking in a conversation with Dr. Charles Wereko Brobby on Tarzan’s Take, on Multi TV, the Minister emphasised that mathematically, if you put all these figures together and added the remaining 650 megawatts that General Electric is supposed to provide over the next three years, the country should have a total of 1,700 megawatts of generation capacity. When added to the existing 2,200 megawatts, the country should be hitting close to its target of 5000 megawatts. He said there are also quite a number of investments in the areas of transmission across the country, to be completed soon.
When pushed by Host Dr. Wereko Brobby to provide specific timelines, the Deputy Information Minister was unable to, but insisted that experts on the field have indicated that demand is growing at a rate of 10% per annum which requires that Ghana "...puts in roughly 200 megawatts of generation capactity annually", otherwise there is likely to be a return to the power ratinoning phenomenon, locally referred to as "dum so dum so", a Twi expreession which means "On and Off".
Dr. Wereko Brobby put to the Deputy Minister that the T2 project in particular, has been lingering for the past 10 years, dating back to when he was CEO of VRA.
