Executive Director of the Ark Foundation, Angela Dwamena Aboagye, has asked government to immediately set up centres in schools to encourage children to report abuses.
Her suggestion follows reports that a teacher at the Ebenezer 5 Junior High School (JHS) in Accra has impregnated a 16-year-old pupil and subsequently aborted the pregnancy illegally.
Information picked up by Joy News suggests the girl is the latest of five known victims of the teacher, Zakaria Amu, in the last seven years.
Angela Dwamena Aboagye told Joy News government must take the issues of child abuse seriously.
"In socially sensitive countries, where they take child abuse seriously, there are structures for reporting [abuses] at the lower level...and [these structures] show children what to do when abuses happen", she said.
She called on the Ministries of Women, Gender and Social Protection and the Education to "start a programme that can be up-scaled in this country."
Meanwhile Mrs. Dwamena Aboagye is urging other victims of Zakaria Amu to also step forward and report to police.
