Citrus farmers in the Birim North District have appealed to the Ministry of Agriculture for assistance to market the large quantities of the produce being harvested from their farms to enable them to pay for loans contracted for the project.
According to the farmers, large quantities of their produce were getting rotten on the farms due to lack of market.
Speaking to GNA in an interview at New Abirem, a spokesman of the farmers, Mr. Kwesi Gyamfi, who owes over 30 acres of citrus farms said a citrus processing factory at Asamankese, Piano Company Limited had not been able to purchase the large quantity of citrus they have harvested.
He said some women from Togo, Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire who came to purchase some of the produce from the farmers on credit failed to pay for them.
Mr Gyamfi therefore appealed to the Ministry of Trade and Industry to woo some investors to establish a possessing factory in the area to process the large quantities of citrus being produced in the district and other adjoining districts to ease their suffering.
When the Deputy District Director of Agriculture, Mr Kann Bentil was contacted on the issue, he confirmed the farmers’ problems and said the agents of the processing factory at Asamankese could not cope with the supply of citrus being produced in the area.
