The Ghana Education Service has sanctioned three officials of second-cycle institutions in the Ashanti Region, for charging unapproved fees.
Headmaster of Toase Senior High School, Annor Yeboah, has been indefinitely suspended while Assistant Headmaster at Saint Louis Senior High School has been transferred, together with an accountant of the school.
A letter signed by the Regional Director of Education, Kofi Sarfo Kantanka, and sighted by Nhyira News, accuses the officials for showing no remorse for wrong-doing.
It indicts Mr. Annor Yeboah for openly telling authorities during a working visit to the school, there was nothing he could do to rectify unapproved fees he had charged.
Following a widespread public outcry over high fees by schools in the region, the GES intervened by publishing the new fees at 437 Ghana cedis for boarders and 264 Ghana cedis for day students.
Ashanti Regional Director, Kofi Sarfo Kanatanka, went on radio to sound a caution to heads of schools to comply with the fees but the situation was persistent.
However, a team of educational authorities led by the Deputy Minister in charge of pre-tertiary, Alex Kyeremah and the Deputy Regional Minister Samuel Yaw Adusei toured various Senior High Schools to confirm the situation.
Though heads of Opoku Ware, Yaa Asantewaa Girls, Prempeh College, Asanteman SHS, Aduman and others were indicted, Mr. Kantanka says headmaster of Toase SHS has been singled due to his attitude to the violation of the laid down procedures.
Mr. Annor Yeboah says he has been unfairly treated, insisting he has been set as scapegoat.
He wants further explanation from authorities for the action less than a month to his retirement.
So far the GES has reprimanded 12 heads of schools, and asked them to commit in writing by November 26, 2013, to credit students with excess of fees collected.
