Ghana suffered a 1-0 loss to Benin in their second game of the 2013 WAFU Zone B tournament on Saturday evening.
A second half goal by from the spot by Cedric Corea helped Benin to the famous victory over Ghana's 10-man home-based national team at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Midfielder Emmanuel Asante received a straight red card for a foul on Benin's Lazadi Fousseni.
The defeat hands the initiative to the Squirrels who go joint-top with Burkina Faso in Group B after the Burkinabes also won by a similar scoreline against Sierra Leone through a goal by Oumarou Nibie in the other group match.
The local Black Stars must win their last game at the group stages against Burkina Faso to boost their chances of qualifying to the knock-out stages.
Ghana, the hosts, opened their campaign on a resounding note thumping Sierra Leone 4-1 in the opening game of the competition.
The winner of the group will progress to the final and meet the top side from Group B while the second placed team in each group will vie for third position.
