Teacher trainees have called off their boycott of classes in protest of government’s withdrawal of their allowances.
The trainees in the three Northern, Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions had vowed to stay away from the classroom unless government restores the package.
Even though government insists the move is to enable the Colleges of Education increase intake, the trainees say it will bring untold hardship on disadvantaged students who depend solely on the allowances.
Their planned week-long protest was short lived as checks by Joy News on some campuses reveal the trainees are back to the classrooms.
Meanwhile Deputy Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa is scheduled to meet the leadership of the teacher trainees over the issue.
He noted that but for the measure; most of the people agitating would not have gained admission to the teacher training colleges.
“Last year only nine thousand students were admitted; this year more than fifteen thousand four hundred students have been admitted so the irony is that they would not even have been admitted to be agitating,” he stated.
Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa said he would meet with principals of the various colleges next week to explain government intensions to the students.
“We are still appealing to them to look at the best interest of teacher training in Ghana”.
