Fisherfolks in Damongo in the West Gonja District in the Savannah Region, are on the run for fear of being arrested by the police, for allegedly poisoning the main water source in the area, the Agricultural Dam.
The poisoned dam, built in 1963, has been a source of livelihood for many farmers in the district.
According to the District Director of Agriculture, Peterclaver Anyeembey, apart from the activities of fisherfolks, they also suspect chemicals from farms located close to the water body may have found their way into the dam.
“I have been there and seen some of the dead fingerlings on the banks of the dam. Chemicals from farm fields closer to the dam could also have drifted into the dam contributing to the contamination,” he added.
The District Chief Executive of West Gonja, Saeed Mauzu Jibril, said all barriers used by the fisherfolks to trap fingerlings and other fishes have been removed to give the fish room to move.
He told Joy News’ Isaac Nongya investigations are ongoing and the law will deal the perpetrators.
