JoyNews' Fred Quame Asare wins Best Health Reporter at Volta GJA Awards.
The honour is in recognition of his work which exposed the adverse effects of period poverty at the Mafi Dove located at Central Tongu in the Volta Region.
The report chronicled how some young girls in the Mafi Dove community resort to unhygienic means to take care of themselves during their period.
It drew the attention of the Fanthonio Foundation who came to the aid of the young girls.
The Founder of Fanthonio Foundation, Ms Felicia Anthonio indicated that learning of how these young girls improvised pieces of cloth as sanitary pads was disheartening.
This, she said, triggered her outfit to mobilise resources to salvage the situation in the interim while permanent solutions are being worked on.
Some 102 girls benefited from the distribution of sanitary products by the foundation.
Speaking after the ceremony, at Volta Serene Hotel in Ho, Mr. Asare expressed his delight at the honour and said it serves as a motivation to do more compelling stories.
“This is the beginning of greater things,” he said, thanking everyone who has contributed to his career.
