Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo has said the government’s policy of a ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ does not mean Ghana does not need aid.
“Even Germany needs aid and America needs aid,” he told participants of the 71st Annual New Year School and Conference at the University of Ghana in Accra.
According to him, the policy is geared toward streamlining the kind of aid Ghana would accept.
“We must decide the priority sectors for the aid we require, we won’t have aid imposed on us,” he said.
The government began the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda in 2017 with the aid of moving the country toward self-sufficiency.
In 2019, a policy document was launched by the government which is expected to guide the vision set for the policy.
According to the document, this vision was to address to become a “prosperous and self-confident Ghana that is in charge of her economic destiny; a transformed Ghana that is prosperous enough to be beyond needing aid, and that engages competitively with the rest of the world through trade and investment.”
