A founding member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has justified his recent public criticisms of some decisions taken by the party.
In a statement issued in Accra, he pointed out that having contributed immensely to the development of the party, “I will not sit unconcerned if there are things to be corrected”.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe was responding to a statement issued by NPP’s Acting Director of Communications, Perry Okudzeto, accusing him of violating his duties as a member of the party.
This follows his critique of the composition of the party’s Vetting Committee, which in his opinion, has no fair ethnic representation.
But Perry Okudzeto stated that the premise on which Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe made the assertion is flawed and also exposed his ignorance about the party’s Constitution.
Mr. Okudzeto said the composition of the Vetting Committee cuts across all ethnic groups, adding, “such unguarded statements deepen the perception and rumour that engulfs the party”
This notwithstanding, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said he is not perturbed about the “pathetic and sinister attempt by Perry Okudzeto to use the NPP’s constitution to gag me.”
He noted that his critic of the committee’s composition is part of his duty as a party member in Article D of the party’s Constitution, which enjoins every member to be vigilant in ensuring the party’s values are observed at all times.
“If the leadership of the party’s five standing committees are predominantly Akan, does he [Okudzeto] not see an issue with that? How can he, in all good conscience, attack the factuality of my concerns?”, he quizzed.
The former Ambassador in the erstwhile Kufuor administration scoffed at Perry Okudzeto’s attempt at defending the composition of the vetting committee since it “exposes the fact that there is a systematic issue of ethnic-skewing in our party leadership that has to be tackled boldly”.
Nyaho-Tamakloe warned Perry Okudzeto against creating a wedge between the NPP and the media by attacking media houses that published his [Nyaho-Tamakloe’s] concerns.
“The NPP traditionally had a constructive relationship with the media and Okudzeto should not use his stint as acting director of communications to jeopardize the relationship by attacking the Daily Graphic for merely reporting on my comments”.
