The 2012 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party Nana Akufo-Addo has welcomed the decision by the governing National Democratic Congress to implement the controversial progressive Free SHS  Education Policy.

Nana Addo said it will be in the supreme interest of Ghana if the government is able to implement a policy he championed in the 2008 and 2012 elections.

The policy became yet another subject of controversy when President John Mahama announced in his state of the nation address that government will implement it in the 201-16 academic year.

During the election, the NDC mounted a strong campaign against the policy describing it as a hoax by the opposition party to win the election. They rather promised to improve upon the quality and access to SHS education.

Members of the NPP on hearing the president's announcement accused the government of stealing its idea.

But government spokespersons  have denied the accusation. They say progressive free SHS education is a constitutional provision and no individual or party can claim to have patent rights over it.

They state further that the progressive free SHS is part of their 2012 manifesto.

Speaking to Oman FM shortly after the Independence Anniversary Celebration, Nana Akufo-Addo said he found it fascinating that a party that campaigned against the policy is now turning round to implement the same policy.

He described it as "good news."
