The leadership of Parliament has made a passionate appeal to the public to provide any evidence of bribery against any Member of Parliament (MP).
The House has opened investigations into a pronouncement by MP for Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency, Alban Bagbin that MPs collect bribes from people and come to the floor to advocate for the persons or institutions from whom they collect bribes.
The MP claimed he had evidence to back his allegations.
His comments have generated lots of furore with calls for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Some MPs are livid over the allegations and are asking the leadership to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee of Parliament for investigations to begin.
On Friday, the Majority Leader, Benjamin Kumbuor, announced on the floor of Parliament that the law-making body has opened investigations into the matter and would accordingly engage the member involved to get to the bottom of the issue.
He, however, made a passionate appeal to the general public to provide any evidence of bribery against any member in order to facilitate investigations into the matter.
"The leadership will want to assure everybody that whatever is appropriate will be done to get to the bottom of this," he stated.
The Minority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu appealed to members to be circumspect in their commentaries on the matter.
He would rather have MPs remain silent on the matter until investigations are concluded in order not to pre-empt the findings of the investigation.
Meanwhile, Collins Owusu Amankwaa (MP) for Manhyia North, who raised the issue on the floor of Parliament and demanded leadership's response on the controversy, said he was disappointed that the leadership failed to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee.
While dismissing assertions the House will protect its own, he was quick to add that Parliament must be seen to be operating with its Standing Orders and be governed by the Constitution of Ghana.
