The National Democratic Party (NDP) says it will not enter into any alliance with New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2016 general elections.
According to the party, it has a different ideology therefore forming an alliance with the NPP will not be in its interest.
The NDP was reacting to a call by Chairman of the Nigerian branch of NPP Kofi Atiemo-Gyan on leadership, to initiate talks with NDP and other opposition parties in the country to unseat the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2016.
Mr. Atiemo-Gyan, also president of the National Association of Ghanaian Communities in Nigeria said, it should be easy for the NPP to approach former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings to form an alliance.
Mrs. Rawlings was disqualified in the 2012 election by the Electoral Commission (EC) due to late filing of nomination forms but sources in the party claim she intends to make a second bid to presidency.
Based on this backdrop, Deputy Director of Communication of NDP, Ernest Owusu Bempah in an interview with CitiNews, said the party is focusing on contesting the 2016 elections alone.
He said the party’s leader, Mrs. Rawlings will be “looking out to win the presidential slot” as a sole candidate.
“2016 is not about parties coming together to form an alliance, it is about our party [NDP] winning the elections”.
Owusu Bempah said NDP will make history by producing the first female president in Ghana if the Electoral Commission (EC) creates an equal playing field for all parties.
“If Dr. Afari Gyan [Electoral Commissioner] does not start his diabolical agenda and prevent Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings from contesting, she is definitely going to emerge the president of Ghana,” he stated.
