A High Court in Tema has summoned a parliamentary aspirant of the ruling NPP, Ramsey Agyeman Prempeh, to answer charges of death threat against him.
Mr Prempeh who had been contesting in the Tema East constituency primaries has now been dropped.
He is being investigated for allegedly threatening to kill the constituency secretary, Charles Boateng. His alleged threat was captured on tape, officials say.
Speaking to Joy News, the Tema Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Inspector Olivia Turkson, said even though the investigator on the case has served criminal summons on him to respond to the allegations, Mr Prempeh has been missing in action.
She said his action has derailed police efforts at adjudicating the matter and threatened to call for a bench warrant to be issued for his arrest if he fails to turn up.
However in a separate interview with Joy News Mr Agyeman Prempeh described the allegations for which he is being investigated as a mere joke.
He claimed he had over the weeks been exchanging funny pleasantries with the constituency secretary, state, the summons are a case of misapplied judgement.
Mr Agyeman Prempeh however said he had honoured an invitation by the Bureau for National Investigation (BNI) to respond to some questions.
The constituency secretary reacting to the issue dismissed suggestions that Mr Prempeh’s statement was a joke and threatened to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.
“What does he mean by a joke? He cannot joke with me and I have to protect my life,” he said.
Asked if he would drop the case if Mr Prempeh approaches with an apology, Mr Boateng said he could only decide after he consults with his family.
He said several death threats in the metropolis that were treated with ‘jokes’ were actually carried out, adding, he would not take things for granted.
