Ghana’s Black Maidens revived their hopes of qualifying for a place at the first ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup when they grabbed a last minute gasp lone goal victory against the Flamingos of Nigeria at the El-Wak stadium in Accra on Saturday.
The solitary goal which proved to be the match winner has put Ghana back in contention for a place at the first ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled for New Zealand.
It was Elizabeth Addo who scored the match winner for the Black Maidens in the 95th minute from a well taken corner kick to condemn the Nigerians as Ghana recorded their first win in the qualifying campaign.
Ghana thus go level on points with Cameroon as both sides have three points each and trail Nigeria, who lead the three-nation table with six points.
The Black Maidens lost their two successive games in the qualifying campaign with the first being an away defeat to Nigeria which ended 4-2 a fortnight ago before falling to Cameroon 1-2 in Accra.
However with the game against the Flamingos at home pointing to a draw, Addo headed in from close range in a game which the Ghanaians hit the post twice while their opponents also had a goal attempt coming off the post.
The Flamingos have won two of their matches and drawn in one and have thus picked one of the two slots for the World championship.
Ghana thus need to pick all three points in their last qualifying game away to Cameroon as the winner of that tie picks one of the two qualifying places available to Africa for the World Cup to be hosted by New Zealand.
The World Cup will be hosted by New Zealand from October 30 to November 16, 2008.
