A 22-year-old Nigerian has been arrested for faking the National Identification Card, way ahead of the commencement of the exercise.
The suspect, Eric Emmanuel, was arrested by personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at the Paga border post following a body search on him when he attempted to cross the border into Burkina Faso.
The search also revealed a number of complimentary cards, including one purported to be that of President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Briefing the media in Accra yesterday, the acting Deputy Director in charge of operations of the GIS, Moses Kwabena Gyamfi, said the suspect was arrested on May 28, 2008.
He said what raised the suspicion of the personnel was the mannerism of Emmanuel when approaching the personnel for a mandatory search.
When he was interrogated, he claimed the ID card was produced for him by somebody who he declined to mention for a fee of GH¢35, 00.
Mr. Gyamfi said Emmanuel is currently in the grips of the Navrongo police assisting in investigations.
The mass registration exercise aimed at collating personal data of all Ghanaians to be used for the National Identification system, began in the Central Region on July 1, 2008.
The National Identification Authority was established in 2003 under the office of the President, to set up a national database for the issuance and use of national identification cards in Ghana.
