The Electoral Commission has rescheduled the date for its limited voter registration.
The exercise is intended to register persons who will be 18 years by June this year as part of the Commissions preparation towards the district level elections.
It was scheduled to take place between June 20 and 29 this year.
But speaking to Joy News after an Inter Party Advisory Committee meeting today, Acting Head of Public Affairs at the Commission, Christian Owusu Parry says the new date will not be before July 27.
He explained the Chairman of the EC announced the postponement after consultations with the Ghana Education Service, because the EC relies extensively on teachers for such exercises.
As a concern, the EC was informed by the GES that the teachers would be engaged during the Basic Education Certificate Examinations, which will coincide with the registration exercise.
He stressed that the teachers are “ very reliable operatives…so we will announce a new date for the start of the registration exercise”.
Parties forming the Inter Party Advisory Committee have agreed the exercise should be postponed.
Meanwhile, the EC has downplayed claims underage children are using the National Insurance identify card to register.
It has therefore challenged anyone with evidence to produce it.
But the National Youth Organiser of the Peoples’ National Convention Abu Ramadan told Joy News he is dissatisfied with EC’s handling of the issue.
He said he has instructed his personal lawyers to go to court to get the law allowing the use of NHIS cards for registration amended.
He hopes to file the suit latest by Wednesday. He is also considering placing an injunction on the limited voter registration.
