The Director of Public Affairs of the Electoral Commission (EC) Christian Owusu Parry has objected to calls by some political parties to have the National Registration Exercise suspended in the Western Region to make way for the Voters Registration Exercise.
Two political parties the National Democratic Congress and the Democratic Freedom Party in an Inter Party Advisory Committee Meeting on Tuesday proposed that the National Identification Authority halt its registration exercise to prevent parallel registration, when the EC opens its voter’s registration exercise on July 31.
According to them the two exercise might confuse the people.
But Mr. Parry said the EC does not control activities by the National Identification authority.
“They are carrying their mandate separately from what the EC is doing” he added.
In an Interview with Joy News on Wednesday, Mr. Parry said the EC will rather focus on the Western Region by rolling out a comprehensive public education exercise that would differentiate between the two registration exercises.
“We will intensify our public education in the Western Region as we go through the exercise, we will send a clear message that the registration by the EC is different from what the NIA is doing”
This Mr. Parry believes will solve any problem of confusion that may arise as a result of the two registration exercises.
The voters registration exercise is scheduled to end on August 10, 2008.
