The Ghana Inshore Fisheries Association has denied media reports eight members of a fishing crew are missing after an accident caused the boat they were traveling in to sink within the Elmina - Cape Coast waters at early Tuesday.
Media reports earlier indicated only 12 out of the 20 member crew were rescued.
They were travelling from Sekondi to Tema for maintenance of the fishing boat when violent waves tossed the vessel around and sank it.
But President of the Association, Joseph Nii Armah Kwei told Joy News the eight persons were rescued in the afternoon same day.
He said immediately the accident occurred they called for help from the Ghana Navy, and “within a matter of 30 minutes we had a call that the 8 people used life boat to come to shore” at a village near Saltpond and were all rescued.
“Nobody died,” he insisted.
Secretary of the Sekondi Branch of the Ghana Inshore Fisheries Association, Mr. Emmanuel Nii Botwey, said most of the boats at the Bosomtwe Sam Fishing harbor, at Sekondi, where the sunken ship took off, are not seaworthy.
Nii Armah Kwei conceded that the boats are not seaworthy, but when questioned why such boats would be taken to sea if they are not in good form, he beat a retreat saying the claims cannot be accurate. “It is not that the boat was really in bad condition…so whoever said the boat was not in good shape was lying”.
