A development economist and a spiky critic of the ruling government, Dr Nii Moi Thompson suspects there may be a “mafia gang” behind the sale of Ghana Telecom.
The gang, he alleges, is “deliberately hiding something” from the citizenry as well as Parliament.
Dr Thompson said government’s bid to privatise the national asset rather raises a three-pronged question.
“Who really stands to benefit from the sale? Who are the people who stand to get 1% of $900million? Who are the people pushing things so hard so they can get their share?” he asked.
Speaking to Joy News, Dr Thompson said although the company may have ran into debt, there is a factor to blame it on: the “deliberate mismanagement” by certain top officials of the company.
He bemoaned the rush with which the company is being sold out and presented a humble suggestion: that the management of GT be probed first.
“It is very interesting that the very people who mismanaged the company …..are the very people who are championing the privatization,” he lamented.
Dr Thompson dismissed suggestions that privatisating the company which is reportedly debt-burdened could help revamp it, describing it all as mere deception.
For Dr Thompson, the deal is simply not good.
