Ghana Highway Authority has insisted, the materials used for the Senchi road are of unquestionable quality despite gaping potholes and serious erosion four months after the road was completed.

PRO of the Ghana Highway Authority Nobert Quamor rather blamed the deplorable state of the road on the lack of concrete gutters and heavy downpour.

He said because of the "absence of concrete drains... it is easy for the rains to erode the road.... because of massive rains ...the least crack can develop into a pothole" he told Multi TV's Joy News.

Myjoyonline.com's Jerry Tsatro Mordy reported, large sections of the road from Juapong to Senchi Ferry have been washed away four months after it was opened for use by motorists.

The 5.9 kilometre stretch has now become a death trap as the recent rains have exposed the noticeable poor work done by the contractor, USSUYA Ghana Limited.

The road is currently being used as one of two alternatives to parts of the Eastern Region and  the Volta Regional capital of Ho in particular, following the closure of the Adomi bridge on March 10, 2014. It will remain closed until 2016.

Already a death trap, the erosion has made the road narrower making it an unexpected challenge for motorist to test their defensive driving skills.

But the PRO insisted it is not dangerous.

"It  will not pose any danger... the narrow road is a technique for curbing accidents. ..[and] a strategy for improving safety" the PRO revealed.

Any expectation for permanent relief would have to wait until the rainy season is over because, it is not advisable to do repair works during this time of the year, Mr. Quamor noted.

The Ghana High Authority, he said is "plead[ing] for understanding" from motorists.

The Authority, he said, is looking for funds to construct the drains to contain the eroding effect of the rains.

In the meantime, the contractor would be asked to fill the pot holes, he explained.
