Once again there is no show in Parliament as the much anticipated debate on the controversial GT sale is postponed. The adjournment was necessitated by a call by the minority in Parliament for time to study the amended sale agreement. The agreement was due for debate and approval by the House on Tuesday. But it was postponed to Wednesday to allow the Joint Committee on Finance and Communications to make some amendments to the agreement. The new report was laid in the House for the debate to commence but the Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga said members did not have the agreement in hand. He called on the House to allow time for members to study the report. His call was supported by the Minority Leader, Mr. Alban Bagbin. Mr. Bagbin told Joy News that it was prudent for members to study the report thoroughly in order to make meaningful debate on the deal. He said the supplementary agreements distributed in the House particularly needed close study. The Nadoli MP said Members of Parliament were representatives of the people and therefore needed to do what is right. That he said could only be done if MP read and understood the agreement well. He told Joy FM’s Kojo Oppong Nkrumah he was looking forward to a lively debate on Thursday. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Stephen Asamoah Boateng agreed with Mr. Bagbin but said the majority will win the debate. The government’s plan to offload 70 per cent of its shares to Vodafone UK has met stiff resistance from civil society groups in the country. Some of the groups including opposition political parties say the $ 900 million for which the company is being sold amounts to a give away. But the government maintains that that is the best deal.
