There’s a big call for local surgeons, popular known as “wanzams” to be given thorough training on how to safely circumcise boys.
This follows the many accidents being recorded in connection with circumcisions by such procedures.
Urologists at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, KATH, in Kumasi are calling for training for such persons.
“We really need as a nation to look at our policy on circumcision and make sure that we put in the necessary mechanism by way of organizing training workshop for all those involved in the training workshop. If possible we should certify all those who are engaged in circumcision,” Dr. Addai Arhin Appiah of the Urology Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, said.
KATH has for the past 20 months recorded 76 cases of penile amputations.
There’s no denying the fact that trained doctors and nurses at the hospitals are also recording such circumcision-gone-bad accidents.
In the second part of JoyFM’s Hotline documentary titled “Borrowed Manhood”, senior broadcast journalist, Seth Kwame Boateng, continues his investigation into the problem and discusses how to avoid falling into the hands of bad wanzams, nurses or doctors.
It airs this Thursday at 8:30am on Hotline, on the Super Morning Show. Listen to the first episode here.
