Mr Ofosu Asamoah, Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, has urged members of the Regional Peace Advisory Council to display neutrality and a sense of patriotism in resolving conflicts so as to avert turbulent conditions in the run-up to the December general elections.
He said the government expected the body, which was amalgamation of security experts, traditional and religious leaders to expeditiously deal with conflicts, which could erupt into violence and thereby disrupt the tranquil environment that had enabled business and social activities to thrive.
Addressing the closing ceremony for members of the Council in Koforidua on Wednesday, Mr Asamoah pleaded with them to discharge their duties with fidelity, aware of the responsibility of ensuring a serene atmosphere for development.
He said the government would count on all such advisory committees to enhance the stability and sustenance of the current democratic dispensation.
Mr Asamoah re-echoed the commitment of the government not to create conditions that would mar the peace and stability that the nation was enjoying.
He also reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure that the maintenance of security was not used as a pretext to trample on human rights of the citizen.
Reverend ACP David Ampah-Benin, Chairman of the Council, said multi-media programmes were being outlined, which were aimed at educating the youth to wean themselves off violent acts.
ACP Ampah-Benin, also the Deputy Eastern Regional Police Commander, said attempts were being made to engage with chiefs and opinion leaders on how to mediate some nascent conflicts in some parts of the region.
