The NDC Parliamentary candidate for Kwabre West, Mr. Pius Opoku Boateng has been sentenced to twelve months imprisonment for double registration.
He was sentenced at Offinso Court in the Ashanti Region.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Mr Daniel Ohene Agyekum, confirmed the sentence to Joy News.
He claimed Mr. Opoku Boateng had no lawyer in court when the case was being heard.
According to him, the convict admitted registering twice which is an offence under the electoral laws of the country.
Mr. Ohene Agyekum said the NDC as a party was in the process of investigating the case when the convict was invited by the police.
The party could therefore not arrange for a lawyer and “the only lawyer in court refused to defend him, he lamented.
The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kweku Ayensu Opare-Addo said Mr. Opoku Boateng was arrested two days ago.
He could not confirm if the accused had a lawyer in court or not.
Mr Opoku Boateng is trained teacher with 35 years teaching experience and was seeking to become a Parliamentarian on the ticket of the NDC.
It is unclear whether the party can replace him, given the fact that the Electoral Commission has closed nominations for both presidential and parliamentary candidates.
