The Editor in Chief of the Dispatch newspaper Ben Ephson says the poor performance of the NPP in the Central Region was as a result of certain unfulfilled promises.
The pollster and analyst told Accra-based TV3 that the NPP could have polled better in the region had they resolved pertinent issues that affected the people.
Analysts believe the invasion of foreign vessels at the high seas as well as the unresolved premix fuel problems influenced voter decision.
Mr Ephson said the turnout sends signals that politicians cannot take the electorate for granted.
He noted that although initial results may be in favour of the ruling party, later results could change the trend.
The stated that ministers who lost their seats in Parliament had been out of touch with their constituents.
The NPP’s Stephen Asamoah Boateng lost his Mfantseman West seat to the NDC’s Aquinas Quansah while NPP MP for Ledzoku Dr. Gladys Norley Ashitey also lost her seat to his NDC counterpart Nii Nortey Dua.
At least four other NPP MPs have also suffered casualties.
Mr Ephson said Prof Mills' loss in the 2004 elections was as a result of a voter apathy generated because of the flag-bearer's relationship with former President Jerry Rawlings.
Although both the NPP and the NDC have predicted a first round victory for their parties, it may be too soon yet to conclude as only 35 percent of the ballots has been declared.
