Two women parliamentarians among 13 female parliamentary candidates in the Northern Region retained their seats in the December 7 general election.
They were Madam Doris Seidu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Chereponi. She polled 9,188 while Hajia Mary Salifu Boforo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had 17,056 votes to retain her Savelugu seat.
Madam Rita Tani Iddi, Deputy Minister of Mines, Lands and Forestry and Hajia Alima Mahama, Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs were among the losers.
Hajia Mahama’s 11,437 votes were not enough to earn her the Nalerigu seat as she lost to Dr Tia Alfred Sugri, who won the election with 15,443 votes.
Madam Iddi, who stood on the ticket of the NPP for the Gushiegu parliamentary seat also lost to Mr Kwesi Thomas of the NDC.
The 13 female candidates contested in 10 of the 26 constituencies in the region.
