Picture this......
A man walks into a night club and sees a very slender lady with eye popping curves. Man walks boldly and says 'excuse me beautiful, may I dance with you?
Lady turns and says' you saw me standing here not dancing when everyone else is... Did you ask why ? I can't even have a cold stout. All because I am told the power is only for the lights and music. Jack, forget it I am not in the mood for your NONSENSE this night...........you can imagine what transpires after that
For this conversation, anytime I say Dumsornomics, just respond 'dark and ugly'.
Try it now
DUMSORNORMICS!!!!!!!
I can hear you respond. Good. He who feels it knows it.
I am sure you've heard by now that the erratic power you get is about to move into the gear of abnormality. Bobo, candles or even the rechargeable lamps for the dadabees and the occupants of 36 Lumumba street will be in short supply before you know it.
A frustrated Evans Mensah, my colleague and diabo partner sounded helpless on Joy Fm's news analysis programme Newsnight as he tried to find hope in the words of the Energy Ministry's communications consultant, Edward Bawa of when this stubborn problem will go away.
Just as I was about to get a response guess what? Uncle Dumsornomics sneaked into my room and my home theatre went off. As my Ashanti brothers will say ' they have done off'.
Nonetheless I reached for my phone and joined in the listening.
We already were told some days ago that the power situation in the country was about to stabilize since the maintenance work was being feverishly worked on and nearing completion. I was elated that finally my neighbor won't have to disturb me at night with his corn mill sounding generator.
But it seems Lawyer Mensah prayed silently to God to make me endure the hurt to my ears a while longer.
As my new friend in Kwabenya Chukwu always says when we talk electricity ' Bros, in my place at Onitsa, everyone don take in destiny place for in palm. We all buy small power motor ( generator). No be say we no get connection to national grid. But in be say the power from the government Na y3y3 power. The power wey dey available Na for the powerful people. The one which remain na for emergency. We be the perchers with no currency'.
Speaking of Chukwu's folks, their countrymen have turned off the tap that provides percher Ghana gas due to labour unrest.
The Volta River Authority has indicated it will be forced to shut down its thermal plants since it cannot work without gas. We also know that as a result of this latest development, some whopping 500 megawatts of power will have to be shed effective today.
So for the CEOs reading this piece, if you were doing see see see with the time to know when you'll get power, change strategy and take Chukwu's advice.
A comment of a mother struck me on Facebook and it was the type that kicked the sleep off my eyes. It read...'I worry for the future of my children. Feeling frustrated'. It was poignant and emotion filled. I can almost imagine her driven to tears.
Why has it become so difficult to be a Ghanaian?
When will all this joke looking fire fighting management end?
If you wake up early dawn like I do, from today what will be on your mind will become heavier.
For parents you will worry about how to manage for your family almost without what you painstakingly pay for now absent.
For businesses, the big worry is how to factor this unforeseen circumstance and still succeed. Some say being a businessman is not for the faint hearted. But a businessman in Ghana now must have a doctor on speed dial or risk dying as a result of this precarious condition.
On the other side of the coin however, Dumsornomics (have you responded?) comes with a good side.
One of my beautiful friends Elorm Tovor wrote this and I thinking its worth sharing.
She says......' I think and believe in every bad situation, there is a good impact on our lives. Thanks to ECG am always in a hurry to go home. That's because mother takes that opportunity to go for a walk or wait for me at the junction. Anytime there is dumsor ( or when Dumsornomics comes visiting) I begin to miss my mum because we get to have our girl chat and trust me it really a detailed one only meant for eternal memory. We also get the chance to play ludo till we both get tired and head to bed. Last week she beat me 4-1. But tonight lailai I will win. Thanks ECG am always happy going home on Wednesdays'.
I see two things happen for Elorm. She will now have Ludo games more often since Dumsornomics will visit very often.
Also, her bond with mother will grow stronger.
Take it or leave it.
Dumsor has come to stay.
Poor planning has brought us here and there's no stopping anytime soon.
Let's hope this nation is not plunged into eternal darkness like before creation.
I am not a happy Ghanaian. It's very tough to be positive.
Asa sums up my submissions with these words from her song 'the way I feel'.
It's not that I don't know
It's not that I can't see
It's not that I haven't noticed
It's driving me insane
It's not that I don't know
It's not that I can't see
It's just the way I feel
It's just the way I feel
I feel like a child without a father
And mama tries oh lord knows mama tries
I feel like the world is on my shoulder
I wonder why, wonder why
I feel like I'm not the only one who's frustrated
I feel like something's going wrong
I can't escape it
I feel like the destinies of those meant
To be the best
Are in the hands of liars now the world is on fire
Don't frown.
It's the new normal. I greet you Dumsornomics. The response? Dark and Ugly.
