The road to the hometown of Ghana’s former President Kwame Nkrumah is in an appalling state as the nation marks Founder’s Day in honour of him for leading the country to independence.

For some visitors and residents of Nkroful, the road to the birthplace of Ghana’s first President is shameful to say the least.

The District Chief Executive of Ellembele, Daniel Ashun agrees that the road to Nkroful is in a deplorable state, but he says steps are being taking to repair it.

Ghana yesterday marked Founder’s Day in honour of the nation’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who led Ghana to independence.

The Founder’s Day falls on Nkrumah’s birthday, September 21^st and as the nation marks a public holiday today, the house in which Nkrumah was born is expected to be receive tourists. But the tourist site is poorly managed. Manasseh Azure Awuni recently visited Nkrumah’s birthplace and reports that the place is poorly managed.

From the Esiama station one is greeted with a nasty spectacle of a refuse dump lining the left side of the road.

The story of the house in which Nkrumah was born is not different from the road to Nkroful. The facility is managed by an eighteen year old senior high school leaver, Stephen Tandoh.

The reception area is a small room, a little spacious than a lotto kiosk. Between the reception area and the main building is a long wall with some quotes of Dr Nkrumah written with a font type which is difficult to read.

Though renovated not long ago, the birthplace of Nkrumah looks abandoned. The doors to some of the doors have no locks.

Some doors have locks but they appear rusty and difficult to open.

The body of Dr Kwame Nkrumah was initially buried here before being transferred to the Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra. But some tourists still want to see the house in which the icon of African liberation struggle was born. But when they visit, they leave with disappointment.

For some residents of Nkroful, the nation making Nkrumah’s birthday a national holiday is not enough so long as his birthplace is neglected.
