ZEN Petroleum, the leading bulk oil distributor to the mining sector in Ghana has donated some medical items worth 20 thousand Ghana cedis to the Tarkwa General Hospital to support its preparedness towards Ebola and cholera prevention in the Municipality.

The items included veronica buckets, hand sanitizers, detergents, and surgical gloves among others.

“We are doing this because as a local company we have a responsibility to our community. Tarkwa is very important to us because a lot of our business is done here. If Tarkwa does well ZEN Petroleum will also do well and if Tarkwa does badly our business will also be affected. That is why we are showing this support to the Tarkwa hospital.” William Tawia the CEO of Zen Petroleum, told Joy news.

He said Ebola and cholera can be prevented if the Ghana health service intensifies education with support from communities and other corporate organizations such as Zen Petroleum.

Mr Tawia was happy that Ghana has not yet record a case of Ebola yet but added that he country can not afford to be complacent in its efforts to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.

Dr Ebenezer Akwaah the medical superintendent at the Tarkwa government hospital who received the items said although the cases of cholera in the Municipality is not as alarming as have been recorded in Accra, it is still a threat; and the municipal health directorate is making proactive efforts towards cholera prevention.

“Hand washing is very important in breaking the cycle of infection when it comes with cholera and Ebola prevention, and as a hospital we have been planning to acquire some of these items which have been presented today by ZEN Petroleum.” Dr Ebenezer Akwaah said.

According Dr Akwaah, it is a policy of the Tarkwa municipal hospital that whoever enters hospital must wash their hands and do same when leaving the facility. He said the items presented by ZEN Petroleum will go a long way to support the hospitals commitment towards implementing this hand washing policy. Since it was going to be a major drain on the hospital’s finance.

He pledged to ensure that all the items are used for the benefit of the community.
