A group, the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) in collaboration with ZoomLion Ghana Ltd will on Tuesday embark on clean up exercise in a section of the Tema Metropolis. The group made up of tertiary and Senior High School students numbering over Two Hundred and Fifty and with some personnel of ZoomLion Ghana Ltd will clean areas around the overhead that links Ashaiman and Tema. The campaign embarked on by the group is aimed at conserving the environment and to actualise government’s initiative to rid the country’s cities and towns off filth.A statement signed by the Deputy General Secretary of the group intimated the exercise will begin at at 6:45am and will involve students from Legon, Koforidua Polytechnic, KNUST and a host of other tertiary and Senior High Schools“According to research, Accra alone produces between 1,500 – 1,800 tons of waste per day with 1200 tons is said to be collected on a daily base. An increase in population rate over the next few years would cause a further increase in waste production of over 2,400 tons per day by 2010. The situation as envisaged would affect the country’s efforts of achieving the Millennium Development Goals on health, since this phenomenon would adversely affect the country’s health system. This situation IYF; in collaboration with ZoomLion believe, requires increased participation of Non Governmental Organizations, Corporate Bodies and other institutions to support government to fight the waste challenge,” the statement saidMembers of International Youth Fellowship (IYF) would use the over two hour exercise to clean up the said area and it is also expected that a number of similar social activities would be held within the year to help in contributing to national development.
