Nima Divisional Police have deployed personnel to Newtown here in Accra following the assault of a man believed to be a homosexual by a group of residents.

Police are also expected to prosecute a man arrested for allegedly beating up the victim. The suspect was part of a mob which attacked and wounded Albert Appiah, popularly known as Kinto.

Nima Divisional Police Commander, ACP Nuhu Jango speaking to JoyNews, denied knowledge of the accusations of homosexuality levelled at Kinto.

He reported that the victim had turned up at the station to file an assault complaint, telling police that “some guys locked him into a corner and attacked him for no reason.”

He adding that “but for your information now we are not aware that this Kinto guy was involved in any acts of 'gaism'.”

He insisted that the police were “just getting this new information that perhaps the assault was on account of his 'gaism',” and that his outfit would look into the matter.

The injured man, according to him, had a few cuts on his forehead and complained of body pains. Otherwise, he said, the victim was fine.

He acknowledged that the victim had received some first aid prior to filing his report and had been given a medical form in order to seek further medical treatment.

ACP Jango added also that the victim will be called in to assist in investigations as and when necessary but stressed that until the veracity of accusations of homosexuality are confirmed, “for now, what we have is assault on Kinto and causing harm”.

The suspect, whose name has been given only as Abubari, is being processed for court on the above charges.

A video of the attack has gone viral on social media, with alleged leaked romantic chat messages between Kinto and one Salim, also being spread online.

ACP Jango explained that although it is normal routine to patrol the jurisdiction, police patrols were being increased in the Nima-Maamobi areas in order to “prevent any possible repercussions” following the social media coverage of the events.

This is not the first case of brutality against alleged homosexuals.

Over the weekend, an incident at the Saint Paul’s Senior High School where a 17-year-old boy lost his life during a students’ revolt after the discovery of two of their own involved in a homosexual act.
