Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Mohammed Nasir Sambo says Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is impressive.
According to him, the NHIS is a shining example in Sub-Saharan Africa.
"Ghana is doing amazingly well with the health insurance programme, we have been impressed with the programmes of the NHIA.
"One thing that I am proud of the NHIA for is that the political commitment to the Scheme has been impressive and the system has worked irrespective of the government in power."
Professor Mohammed Nasir Sambo made these remarks at the climax of a Nigerian delegation’s three days official visit to Ghana to study the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) operations.
“Nigeria started health insurance before Ghana but the rate at which Ghana is progressing with the social intervention programme needed to be studied.”
On her part, Ghana’s NHIA CEO, Dr Lydia Dsane-Selby called for more collaborative efforts between the two institutions.
"We are happy you came and is been amazing having you around for the past three days, our doors are always opened to you and other Sub-Saharan African countries."
During the delegation’s visit, Directors from the NHIA's various Directorates including Ben Kusi, Director for Membership and Regional Operations (MRO) and Ismail Osei, Acting Director for Quality Assurance made presentations on topics relating to their directorates.
Other presenters were, Ruby Aileen Mensah, Deputy Director for Provider Payments and Manager for Research, Policy, Monitoring and Evaluation, Rosemary Bimpomaah Mensah-Anobah.
Officials of the NHIA led by Dr. Francis-Xavier Andoh-Adjei, Director of Administration took the Nigerian delegation through some major themes of the NHIS.
The delegation visited the Dodowa NHIS District Office, Ayawaso District Office, Shai Osudoku Government Hospital (Dodowa), Greater Accra Claims Processing Centre (CPC) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
