The Takoradi Market Circle and some 116 other markets in the Western Region, will be closed down on Monday, April 6, to allow disinfection spraying exercise.
The exercise forms part of government’s programme to disinfect all markets and other public areas across the country, following the recorded cases of COVID 19 pandemic in the country.
The disinfection will commence simultaneously in all 117 markets at 6.00 am on Monday.
Western Regional Minister, speaking at the regional launch of the disinfection exercise, urged at all stakeholders in all the 14 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), including the market women and transport operators, to lend their support and co-operate with the Zoomlion Teams to ensure the success of the exercise.
Dr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah said “my advice to MMDCEs is assisting the Zoom Team with experienced sprayers, caterers to cook for the sprayers, accommodation, water for spraying at the various markets, make pick-up vehicles available to convey workers to and from the field, engage all relevant stakeholders and provide security, all at the expense of Zoomlion Ghana Limited.”
Although the exercise will begin on Monday, the Takoradi Market Circle and Sekondi Market will be closed to the public on Sunday, April 5, at 12 noon to enable the Ghana Fire Service to flush the drains in preparation for the disinfection exercise.
Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Sekondi–Takoradi, K.K Sam, has cautioned shops operators close to the market to refrain from opening their shops on Monday.
“Don’t have the idea that it’s the market so if you are having your shop there you can open. To those in the enclave of market circle please don’t do it,” he added.
The exercise includes all public places especially lorry parks in the jurisdiction of all the 14 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Region
In all 1,698 sprayers will be spraying the 117 markets and another public place in the Western Region.
