The General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association has advised against calling off the current lockdown in the face of the growing number of Covid-19 cases.
Dr Justice Yankson said the situation has not yet been contained to warrant such a move.
“The figures keep going up and clearly, at this moment, it is not advisable to call off the lockdown, we haven’t contained our situation yet,” he stated.
“The essence of the lockdown is basically to break the chain of transmission and prevent further spread,” he said on Joy News' 'The Lockdown' programme on Sunday.
According to him, since the number of coronavirus cases have spread across the regions, there is a likelihood a lockdown extension.
Dr Yankson explained that the decision to extend the lockdown to other region would be based on the development in communities.

“Hitherto, some of these regions were not in there but we are seeing numbers, so the It’s possible that we may extend it to that end,” the doctor said.
In President Nana Akufo-Addo’s 4th address to the nation on March 30, he declared a 14-day lockdown to aid the fight against coronavirus.
This was exclusive to Accra, Tema and Greater Kumasi who were the epicentres for the outbreak.
However, on April 9, the president in his 6th address on April 9, he announced a 7-day extension to the partial lockdown bringing the number of days to 21.
