The President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Frank Serebour, has stated that during the resurgence of the Bawku conflict, no medical practitioner working in the area has been physically and directly attacked.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse programme on Tuesday, April 15, in response to reports of health facility staff leaving their posts out of fear of being attacked, Dr. Serebour explained that while he understood the concerns of medical personnel in the region, none had been directly targeted.
“Let me also clarify that, directly, no doctor has been targeted. We have not had any doctor specifically attacked, which offers us some comfort,” he said.
Dr Serebour noted that if any staff member’s life were threatened, they would be swiftly relocated from the area to ensure their safety.
He also revealed that, due to the recent escalation of the conflict, at least ten medical practitioners have left the region.
Following the resurgence of the conflict a group of armed robbers shot and killed two police officers at Poyamirea, a community on the outskirts of Binduri in the Upper East Region.
